Setup

Bluetooth always on · plus one mode

Four ways to start.

Bluetooth is always on for the app, updates and the BTHome broadcast. In addition the sensor runs one mode: BTHome by default, or Zigbee or Thread, switched in the app in about a minute.

Home Assistant · BTHome

Default
  1. Place the sensor in room light, or give it a quick start over USB-C.
  2. Home Assistant with Bluetooth, or a Bluetooth proxy (ESPHome, Shelly) nearby, discovers it via BTHome.
  3. Confirm the discovered device. New values arrive with every broadcast, every 10 s.

No cloud, no hub, no account. BTHome v2 is an open standard (bthome.io).

Zigbee 3.0

Sleepy end device
  1. In the app, switch the network mode to Zigbee. About a minute, no download needed.
  2. Put your coordinator into pairing mode: ZHA, Zigbee2MQTT or another Zigbee 3.0 coordinator.
  3. The sensor joins as a sleepy end device and uses your mains-powered routers.

Tested with Home Assistant ZHA.

Thread · Matter beta1

Beta
  1. In the app, switch the network mode to Thread.
  2. Commission it in Home Assistant, with its Matter server and an OpenThread border router.
  3. During the beta, Home Assistant needs a one-time certificate step.

1 Implemented to the specifications; certification pending. Apple, Google and Amazon are not tested.

Android app

Rooms first
  1. Pair the sensor with the passkey on its label: every unit has its own.
  2. See every room: live values, comfort, charts from 6 h to 30 d, alerts.
  3. Energy meter, calibration offset, CSV export, firmware updates and the network-mode switch.

No iPhone app yet. In BTHome mode, Home Assistant reads the sensor without any app.

FAQ

Every answer.

Light and power

01How much light does it need?

About 8½ hours of 200 lx a day, which is normal living-room light. Twice the light, half the time: 400 lx for about 4¼ hours does the same. A spot near a window is plenty.

  • Hallway50–100 lx
  • Living room100–300 lx
  • Office desk300–500 lx
  • Next to a window, overcast day1,000–5,000 lx
  • Direct sunup to 100,000 lx

Try your own room in the light calculator.

02What happens in winter or in the dark?

A full energy store lasts about 4 weeks (26–27 days) in complete darkness. A dark corner may need a USB-C top-up (5 V) now and then; USB-C is also handy for a quick start.

Long-term field data is still being collected: an indoor winter test is running right now.

03Is there a battery inside?

No. The energy is stored in a lithium-ion capacitor, not a battery, rated for more than 50,000 cycles. There are no batteries to change.

Smart home, app and security

04Which smart-home systems does it work with?
  • BTHome (default)Home Assistant, auto-discovered
  • Zigbee 3.0ZHA, Zigbee2MQTT, other Zigbee 3.0 coordinators
  • Thread (Matter beta)tested with Home Assistant

Zigbee is tested with Home Assistant ZHA. Matter over Thread is tested with Home Assistant’s Matter server and an OpenThread border router; during the beta, Home Assistant needs a one-time certificate step. Apple, Google and Amazon are not tested and not certified yet: certification is pending.

05Do I need a hub, a cloud or an account?

No cloud, no account, no subscription: the sensor talks to your smart home locally and your data stays in your home. In BTHome mode you need no hub at all; Zigbee and Thread use the coordinator or border router your smart home already has.

06What is the range?

Bluetooth LE indoors typically reaches 10–30 m. Home Assistant Bluetooth proxies (ESPHome, Shelly) extend the range. In Zigbee and Thread mode the sensor uses your mesh of mains-powered routers; the sensor itself is a sleepy end device.

07Is there an iPhone app?

Not yet: the app is for Android. In BTHome mode, Home Assistant reads the sensor without any app.

08How do updates work?

Every improvement reaches the sensor as a signed over-the-air update from the app. If anything goes wrong, the sensor rolls back automatically.

09Is it secure?

Every unit has its own Bluetooth passkey, printed on its label: there is no shared default password. The firmware is signed, and everything stays local.

Accuracy and hardware

10How accurate is it?
  • Climate · Sensirion SHT40±0.2 °C · ±1.8 %RH (typ.)
  • Climate Pro · Sensirion SHT45±0.1 °C · ±1.0 %RH (typ.)
  • Climate Pro · Bosch BMP581±0.3 hPa absolute · ±0.06 hPa relative

In the app you can set a calibration offset against a reference instrument. See the full comparison.

11How do I mount it?

With the removable adhesive strip in the box: on a wall, a window frame or a shelf. Indirect daylight or room light is perfect. Avoid direct sunbeams on the sensor, they warm the case and skew the temperature reading, and keep it away from radiators.

12Where is it made?

In Itingen, Switzerland, near Basel. Swiss made: Designed, built and shipped in Switzerland. Every unit is hand-tested and serial-numbered.

The case is produced in-house in Switzerland from ASA; making it ourselves lets us build small batches and improve the design between batches.

Orders, shipping, returns

13How fast do you ship, and are there customs?
  • Switzerland, LiechtensteinSwiss Post from Itingen · 1–3 working days
  • Other countriesnot yet: ask us
  • Above the stockbuilt to order · 2–4 weeks

No customs: we ship within Switzerland and to Liechtenstein, which shares the Swiss customs area. Shipping is calculated at checkout from the real postage.

14What about returns and warranty?

30-day returns with no reason needed, and a 2-year warranty. Details: returns, warranty.

15It’s a first batch: what does that mean for me?

The hardware of this batch is final; the firmware keeps getting better. Every improvement reaches the sensor as a signed over-the-air update from the app, with automatic rollback if anything goes wrong.

Long-term field data is still being collected (an indoor winter test is running right now). Pioneers get a direct line to the engineers: issues get fixed fast. Early, not unfinished.

16Can I order 20 or 50?

Yes. The volume discount applies to the whole order, in any mix: 3+ units −10 % (Trio), 5+ −15 % (Home), 10+ −20 % (House). Units above the stock are built to order and ship in 2–4 weeks. Shops and installers: apply as a dealer.
